World Refugee Day: Monaco’s Mission to the UN teams up with Peace and Sport

Projection de La Flamme de la Paix © DR As part of events to mark World Refugee Day, and in recognition of Monaco being named World Capital of Sport 2025, a special screening of the documentary “The Flame of Peace” took place at Monaco’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, on 19 June 2025.A co-production by Monaco Info and Peace and Sport, the documentary follows a year in the organisation’s work around the globe - from Monaco to the Middle East, via Latin America, India, and Africa - showing how sport can be a powerful way to promote peace, social cohesion, and hope, even in the most challenging situations. In the film, some of the coaches, young people, and Peace Champions involved with the initiatives share their inspiring stories, giving viewers an insight into sport’s power to overcome barriers, restore dignity, and help displaced people to integrate. The screening was followed by a round-table discussion with two iconic personalities:• Marlène Nidecker, Olympic taekwondo medallist and member of the Champions for Peace Club, who has spent years working to promote access to sport for young people in Africa, through the Heart Angel foundation.• Ali Hussein, Syrian refugee and kickboxing coach, whose work with young people at the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan helped to change lives and bring hope to a generation living in exile. The event highlights the Principality of Monaco’s unwavering commitment to leveraging sport as a way to promote development, protection, and inclusion, especially for forcibly displaced persons, of whom the UN High Commission for Refugees estimates there are now more than 120 million worldwide.

Child vaccination: Monaco reaffirms its support for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance

Isabelle Rosabrunetto au Sommet de l'Alliance Gavi ©DCI At a Gavi global summit in Brussels on 25 June, Isabelle ROSABRUNETTO, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, announced that the Prince’s Government would double its financial support for the Alliance’s 2026-2030 strategy. The Principality’s Department of International Cooperation devotes some 30% of its annual budget to healthcare, making the sector one of the biggest recipients of Monegasque development aid, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is among the Department’s leading partners. Founded at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2000, Gavi brings together national governments, public banks, major multilateral institutions, non-profits, and private enterprises. At the summit in Brussels on 25 June, Gavi held a meeting with current and potential stakeholders aimed at securing the funding it needs to carry out its work. Co-hosted by the European Union and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the event secured over 9 billion dollars in donor pledges, despite the United States government’s decision to withdraw funding. Over the last 25 years, more than a billion children have been vaccinated thanks to Gavi’s work.Ms ROSABRUNETTO praised the organisation’s model, which allows fair access to vaccination in less developed countries, but stressed that “we absolutely need to step up our efforts, because it is unacceptable that children are still dying every day as a result of not being vaccinated. That is why the Principality of Monaco has resolved to double its support for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance over the next five years.”In line with its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 (“Good Health and Well-being”), the Department of International Cooperation will continue to fund efforts aimed at combating child and youth mortality and infectious diseases over the period 2025-2030.
